I have both several Gmail and Live Mail (Microsoft, similar to HotMail) accounts, and they all work very well.
I use them in IMAP mode, so I can access them via mail clients from different PCs. As far as I know, HotMail does not offer that IMAP feature.
I have not had any problems with them during the last years.
Further I have made bad experiences with Yahoo (problems with integrated virus scanner) and German providers web.de and gmx.net, which I do not recommend.
They got them back. In any case, one should have offline backups of their emails when using a third-party service. One method is to setup Thunderbird to download emails automatically for disaster-recovery (this is what I do for my Gmail).
What Browser do you use ? I just access the site with IE (which I don't use; just tested IE for the purpose of this post), Opera, Firefox and Safari and it is OK, except for Opera that displays "Browser Is Not Supported", but still allows you to continue to access the site when you click the "Continue" button. In any case, me.com is an Apple Mail service that attracts subscription fee, it is therefore not free; I use it on my Mac's Mail client and it is just GREAT.
