I don't play any computer games, but did just help my son assemble an I-5, EVGA 570 gaming computer.
I have not yet tried it with Ninjatrader but plan to, eventually.
The trading computer I use now has a very strong Intel processor with lots of RAM, but mediocre graphics cards. The swap file and Gom data files are in a separate partition on their own physical disk.
Anyone have info whether the features of a good gaming computer, such as a high end graphics card and SSD, help to improve operation of tradng software, especially chart loading time and responsiveness?
What are the hardware features that DO make a difference?
Can you help answer these questions from other members on NexusFi?
Battlefield 3 looks awesome. The last game I played was America's Army, an fps actually made by the US Army as a recruiting tool. It was free and insanely great until they did a wholescale revamp a while back and everybody deserted it.
I could easily be wrong but I think the high end graphics cards are really geared towards juicing 3d graphics capabilities with all kinds of texture, angle, and physics processing. I'm not quite sure how a lot of that would translate to 2d charts other than your basic frame rate issues. JMHO
Just an offline, occasional gamer here. On PC, specifically, I am currently playing 'LIMBO' which happens to be a wonderfully creative and unique game. Other favorites include but are not limited to: 'Armadillo Run', the 'Half-Life/Portal' series, and Appeal's 'Outcast'.
Lots of RAM (8GB+). High-end SSD. High-end video card. Intel i7 CPU. Good quality/efficient/quiet PSU. Those are the essentials. I take it a step further and use server components (Xeon, ECC RAM, workstation graphics, etc) to make a workstation I can count on. No doubt one can get by on less, and the benefits may be minimal, but I tend to optimize what can be optimized.
For trading platforms.... a decent cpu, plenty of ram are all you really need. A good SSD will improve load times and responsiveness for everything. SSDs also do not require fragmenting.
I think spending money on a high end gpu is a waste though. Unless your trading machine will be used for gaming or other things beyond running your trading platform.
Been playing this game just a bit, and imo will be remembered as one of those REALLY GREAT games for a while to come. The story, artwork and overall concept appear to be something really special. A lot of the people who were fans of the original were skeptical about it, but many seem to be really pleased with this latest edition.
It might not be a game for everyone, but if you like RPG games like Medal Gear Solid, I think you will have a similar experience with this one. There are really so many ways you can accomplish your task. Just soooo many facets and options to this title. Not only are there choices between sneaking to your objectives vs. going H.A.M. on the enemy... but there are different ways to accomplish things..... You often have opportunities to talk your way into an area, shoot your way in, sneak in through some air duct, hack a security system, search for the code to that security system or various other ways in which you can choose.
With all that, there are some problems I have with this game.
My biggest problem is the graphical aspect of it. Let me warn you though, I am a total graphics-whore. While the artwork and the environment are an awesome idea, just graphically it doesn't look like a game should look given that its running in a DX11 environment. It's like they took all the creative resources and shoved them into story and concept, and completely left the graphics on the back burner. Don't get me wrong, they aren't so bad that it really distracts from the game, but they imo are rather lacking.
Also I find annoying some of the voice acting. Of course they have to throw in the stereo-typical Aunt Jemimah type speech patterns for some of the minorities, which I always find annoying and ridiculous.
The controls are also a bit more complex than I think they needed to be. There is quite a bit of a learning curve to starting out.
