BTW: I am aware that FIO's user population is likely to be predominantly male, but I would be interested in views from everyone who thinks has something to say about this.
This starts from home and I agree, if you are going to do it, it should start early.
But I've also noticed increasing trend of "calling every little thing" a "problem" in our supposed target of gender equality.
Society is complicated, these things can also be very very emotion driven rather than logic, sometimes misguided emotions.
I sincerely hope this doesn't come down to everyone having to call every other person something that's always gender neutral, that's absurd, it makes no sense and using gender specific terminology is by no means "demeaning", the fact that some overzealous people like to portray it as such, its a problem in itself and these same overzealous do more damage to the cause than any good.
//Just my 2c, I'm no scholar and I'm usually not very fond of having heated debates on these things, they just trigger people for no reason
My wife, leaving a Starbucks the other day said "thanks girls" to the two young women working on her way out.
She came back to me and said "I feel horrible". I said why? She said because I said girls. I said so? Because you normally say ladies?
She said NO because I don't know what they prefer?
OMG I said! Well just say "have a nice day" then and dont use pronouns I said. This is gonna get complicated.
She hates the word "retard" and I agree and dont use anymore either.
This argument reminds me of the study...
An open train car with 5 people is barreling down the tracks above a canyon. The tracks end up ahead and all 5 are going to fall to their deaths.
There is a fat man (I mean a larger man the average man) tied to the tracks down the way.
If YOU pull the lever the tracks will switch and send the car killing the man and stopping the car saving the 5 in the car but again killing the man. What do you do?
This is an interesting one. I use "hey guys" freely in speech without thinking about gender, but I do feel awkward when putting the same words in writing. For some reason, addressing a group (with females included) in an email starting with "hey guys" just doesn't feel right to me. I tend to correct and use team, or all.
funniest thing I saw in a while was this guy Peterson (non-PC guy all over youtube) talking with some jackass who thinks everyone should be referred to by their "preferred pronouns"... ok you know this is ridiculous already, right? lol anyhow... when Peterson asked how he can possibly remember which pronoun to use with whom he was told by the other guy - "oh it's simple, you see I just keep them in my phone - I attach a note to each contact" - simple, right??
and this is the problem with all these things these days... all these people think they should be able to tell other people what they should or shouldn't say, what words they can or cannot use. What jokes they can or cannot tell. Everyone is (should be) entitled to their own opinion, you don't have to agree with it.
