Sometimes I simply like to take a break and go for a drive to get coffee. It's enjoyable to drive my car alone, but I like to add a purpose to it. I'll take the back roads where all the nice trees and houses are to get some. Sometimes I'll drive through a town and walk around there.

Lately the markets have been really lackluster which is a great indication that a break is needed. I'll even go as far to say sometimes it's good to take a break from forums and the internet. Seeking too much advice can distort ones original focus. Hopefully sometime after labor day the volatility will pick up. There's nothing worse than being all pumped up to trade without a very conducive market to jump in.

Since coffee isn't good enough and a Starbucks iced latte costs $4.50, I decided to cut my costs and bring the store home. I bought a black & Decker espresso mio machine, syrup, and espresso. This way I can make them for myself at a fraction of the cost. Another perk is that the drinks taste a lot better homemade.

Basically the cost of a latte homemade costs roughly a dollar.

Here's the breakdown:

$15 for the espresso maker

$26 for syrup and espresso

makes roughly 42 drinks!

That would be $189 worth of latte bought in store.

189 - 41 = 148 dollars saved.

This doesn't even account for the longevity of the espresso maker which will probably last through another bag of espresso and syrup.

So basically you're getting ripped off when you buy these drinks at the coffee shop. 41 dollars for all the ingredients and equipment (not including the water, milk, microwave, or the electricity used) makes 42 drinks, so that basically means that same latte costs roughly a dollar and you don't have to tip!

You might say "Itchy that doesn't account for the cost of a real espresso machine" to which my response is yes, it kind of does. A real espresso machine would last the duration of more than 42 drinks. You could probably make hundreds of drinks in a real machine. Remember that 41 dollars of cost for 42 drinks includes the cost of the mio machine I bought. In all honesty with buying espresso and syrup in bulk, the real cost of a latte from the store is probably even less than a dollar minus labor and overhead.

No wonder they're opening up stores all over the place!

And yes I did just drink one

Coffee is the only "bad" habit I have left, too much will give me acid reflux. Been slowly cutting back from 3-4 full cups a day to 2 espressos. I love the Nespresso machines, so easy to use. The second one I bought is the Lattissima which seemed like it could be easy to add milk to the coffee, but now I just drink it black with a little bit of honey. Takes a little over a minute to make coffee. The pods are around 65 cents I think, so saving some money vs Starbucks $5 "premium" coffee. Even the Starbucks pod system is expensive.

I was curious if you noticed any reduction in acid reflux after switching from coffee to espresso? I'm not sure if that was what you were insinuating or not.

I ended up going to a gastrointerologist having no clue what was up. I quit coffee and other acidic stuff for a while after that to get back to normal levels, now I just drink less coffee, can't quit it completely... I used to drink a lot tho, 4 big cups during the day, now I probably drink 1/4 less, 2 small cups. Each of the big cups was prob 2 of the small ones I drink now. I just like coffee, and went from 1 regular cup, to 2, 3, 4 large cups until my body said "take it easy".

Just had one around 1:30 pm, also trying out what they say about cortisol levels. Pretty hard to resist the urge to drink 1st thing when I wake up, and 9:30 is the worst time to be making coffee right at market open, lol, I do it around 9:20 quickly.

But I was thinking maybe the switch to espresso instead of regular coffee would help with the acid reflux considering a shot of espresso has less content and the same amount of caffeine as a cup of coffee.
