Probably depends on what you mean by "algorithmic trader"

For a beginner getting into automated trading " Building Winning Algorithmic Trading Systems, + Website: A Trader's Journey From Data Mining to Monte Carlo Simulation to Live Trading (Wiley Trading)" by Kevin Davey / @kevinkdog is a great start.

" Trend Following, 5th Edition: How to Make a Fortune in Bull, Bear and Black Swan Markets (Wiley Trading)" by Michael Covel and " Following the Trend: Diversified Managed Futures Trading" by Andreas Clenow while both trend following specific, give an excellent framework for managing an automated futures trading portfolio. In fact I would recommend any of Covel's books.

If you want something heavier " Algorithmic Trading: Winning Strategies and Their Rationale (Wiley Trading)" and " Quantitative Trading: How to Build Your Own Algorithmic Trading Business (Wiley Trading)" both by Ernest Chan might interest you.

@Shaban already mentioned Cybernetic Analysis for Stocks and Futures by John Ehlers. Another one of his books is " Rocket Science for Traders: Digital Signal Processing Applications" but be forewarned there's a reason "Rocket Science" is in the title. This definitely isn't for somebody who is bad at math!

Add a few more classic must reads for anyone serious about algo trading. These cover most of it from simple strat ideas to testing, money management as well as detailed portfolio construction and diversification:

- Trading Systems and Methods (Perry J Jaufman)
- The Evaluation and Optimisation of Trading Strategies (Bob Pardo)
- Following the Trend (Andreas Clenow)
- Systematic Trading (Robert Carver)

I cannot believe it took 3 posts for "Trading Systems and Methods" to pop up. surely this is the long-standing bible.

His newer book is also good which focuses on the methodology of finding a successful strategy without all of the technical details of statistics and how indicators work that's covered in Trading systems and methods:

- Kaufman Constructs Trading Systems (Perry J Kaufman)

You can't go wrong with a Perry Kaufman book!

He and I converse via e-mail, and I always learn something new from this legend of trading.
