Is there anybody successfully trading futures during the Asian session (between 5PM and 10PM EST Mon-Fri)? if so, what futures contracts are best traded during that time and what strategies and/or timeframes?
Thank you.
Can you help answer these questions from other members on NexusFi?
I also noticed that 6E has some small, consistent trends during this time. For example, I noticed that there were some news that came out at 19:30 in Australia and 6A went down 30 ticks within 1 minute of the news.
Realistically, how would I have been able to capture any of this move? Would a bracket order above (stop buy order 1 tick above) and below (stop sell order 1 tick below) the recent trading range prior to the news have worked? Wouldn't the order fill incur a very significant slippage? I attached a file of the 1 min 6A chart around today's news.
I guess I like the slower, gradual moves but not super fast like crude oil during the European session. The reason I'm asking about the Asian session is that 5-10 pm EST would be the only time I'd have access to trade and I know that's the absolute slowest time to trade. Usually during this time there are a lot of pullbacks after moves that occurred earlier in the day and the market has more of a tendency to rest during this time. What I'm looking for is something that will have some consistent, small trends during this time of the day.
Solid rundown of the Asian session space. HSI is the go-to for most traders looking at that time window -- the liquidity is there, and 200-400 point daily ranges give you something to work with.
The point about FX needing longer timeframes during Asia hours is worth underlining. Spreads widen, liquidity thins out in many pairs, and you get those grinding, reactive moves that chop up shorter-term traders. If someone's coming from ES or CL and expecting the same rhythm, they're in for an adjustment.
One thing I'd add -- the first two hours after Asian open tend to concentrate the best liquidity. After that initial burst, things can get choppy depending on the day. Economic releases from China, Japan, or Korea can trigger sharp moves, so keeping an eye on the calendar matters more than it might during RTH for US futures.
KOSPI has that volatility reputation for a reason. Not for everyone, but traders who like faster-moving contracts often gravitate there. Nikkei tends to be more measured by comparison.
For anyone considering this session -- IB does provide access to most of these contracts, but commission structures and margin requirements vary. Worth checking the specifics before diving in.
Good info for the thread.
