Imagine the ES pit back in the 1980s. Say you're a pit trader/computer server for this metaphor. On a normal trade day, you'll be able to clearly hear all of the people communicating with you. Bids and offers (and requests to access this forum or that page) are easy for you to deal with. Now imagine being in the pit during the crash in the 80s. Everything is chaotic; you know that people are buying and selling because you hear the noise, but you can't talk to the guy five feet away from you because everybody is screaming in your ear. When the computer server gets a couple of morons "shouting" at it from their computers, it can't hear the rest of us who actually want to use the site.
This isn't a perfect example but a DDoS attack basically bombards the server with so many requests that it cannot function properly.
@Big Mike, it looks like I stopped receiving email notices of my subscribed threads sometime yesterday, 8/10/16. I've made no changes to my FIO settings, there is nothing in my spam folder, and I am getting emails from other sources.
