2) What are your favorite features of MultiCharts?
Reliability of backtesting, ease of use with arbitrary data, multicore/multiprocessing support (especially for optimization), exceptional ease of going live with the very same code you've just tested.
3) What are some must-have deal breaker features in MultiCharts that you could not do without?
Same as listed in 2).
4) Do you use MultiCharts in simulation mode only, or do you place live trades with it?
I use it for trading several live accounts, retail and institutional.
5) Are you a discretionary trader or an algorithmic trader? How does MultiCharts help you with this?
100% algorithmic and automated. MC is a very convenient RAD platform with great live trading capabilities.
6) How easy/hard was it for you to learn to use MultiCharts?
No problem as I switched from Omega Prosuite.
7) How do you rate MultiCharts's customer service/support, assuming you have needed to use it?
Hard to answer because I have sort of special relationships with them, but their team was very helpful when I suddenly ran into issues running two ZF/Rithmic connections from the same instance of MC concurrently. My special regards to Jeff Jenkins and Roman Cherkashin.
8) Do you believe MultiCharts is competitively priced?
Absolutely.
9) How do you rate the community support that exists for MultiCharts?
2) What are your favorite features of MultiCharts?
The payment structure - I paid one price and now I "own" it. No b/s with minimum trading amounts, monthly lease fees etc. that you get with TradeStation.
I like how dependable it is - it rarely ever crashes (and I mean rarely) and it is never slow.
3) What are some must-have deal breaker features in MultiCharts that you could not do without?
Payment structure, stability.
4) Do you use MultiCharts in simulation mode only, or do you place live trades with it?
I use MC to generate signals which I then manually enter into my trading platform.
5) Are you a discretionary trader or an algorithmic trader? How does MultiCharts help you with this?
Algorithmic trader - MC helps most by helping me to prototype and backtest systems quickly.[/B]
6) How easy/hard was it for you to learn to use MultiCharts?
Fairly easy - it took a little time to get my orientation right, but now it's straightforward. I had used eSignal prior to this and MC, while not having all the features of eSignal, works a lot faster and with greater stability.
7) How do you rate MultiCharts's customer service/support, assuming you have needed to use it?
Solid - they've responded and solved my issues rapidly and comprehensively.
8) Do you believe MultiCharts is competitively priced?
Yes, for what you get - absolutely.
9) How do you rate the community support that exists for MultiCharts?
Good although the community is not huge. There are some very gifted programmers / traders who use MC and are willing to share their insights.
1) How long have you been using MultiCharts?
Since 2010
2) What are your favorite features of MultiCharts?
Using multiple DataFeeds/Broker-Connections simultaniously. This is the main reason for me; NinjaTrader can't do this, but I do need this feature.
3) What are some must-have deal breaker features in MultiCharts that you could not do without?
See 2)
4) Do you use MultiCharts in simulation mode only, or do you place live trades with it?
Just charting.
5) Are you a discretionary trader or an algorithmic trader? How does MultiCharts help you with this?
Discretionary, trades are placed with NT.
6) How easy/hard was it for you to learn to use MultiCharts?
Very easy.
7) How do you rate MultiCharts's customer service/support, assuming you have needed to use it?
Needed support only once; got a quick reply.
8) Do you believe MultiCharts is competitively priced?
Yes.
9) How do you rate the community support that exists for MultiCharts?
Good, but not excellent. NT seems to have more "supporters".
1) How long have you been using MultiCharts?
1 Year 2) What are your favorite features of MultiCharts?
Portfolio backtester, multiple datastreams, custom data series, easylanguage compatability, 3-d optimization charts, tick IDs for each tick. 3) What are some must-have deal breaker features in MultiCharts that you could not do without?
Portfolio backtester, tick IDs, custom/multiple data streams, easy language compatibility. 4) Do you use MultiCharts in simulation mode only, or do you place live trades with it?
Live trades. 5) Are you a discretionary trader or an algorithmic trader? How does MultiCharts help you with this?
Both, i have run 100% automated strategies using live money as well as discretionary trades in a seperate account. Ran fine every time. I have encounterd some gotchas, but nothing that was a deal breaker. 6) How easy/hard was it for you to learn to use MultiCharts?
Easy, came from tradestation, But i tried sierra, ninja, esignal before settling on multicharts. 7) How do you rate MultiCharts's customer service/support, assuming you have needed to use it?
Good, i have used it excessively. Actually this was one of the selling points since i have found 2 bugs that have been now patched. Everytime i got in tech support i was helped quickly. 8) Do you believe MultiCharts is competitively priced?
Relatively well priced. 10-20% reduction would be nice. But i paid full price for a lifetime license after 1 year, if thats anything to go by. 9) How do you rate the community support that exists for MultiCharts?
Not good as compared to tradestations community. in order of activity and feed back i would rate the communities 1) tradestation 2) ninja 3) multicharts. you do get answers but there isnt a lot of archived stuff there.
1) How long have you been using MultiCharts?
Two years.
2) What are your favorite features of MultiCharts?
Multibroker and-datafeed, Portfoliobacktester, 3D Optimizationchart, Multicore Cpu support, backtest on chart where you can directly see the result of parameter changes of strategies, Easylanguage/Powerlanguage, great reports
3) What are some must-have deal breaker features in MultiCharts that you could not do without?
Fast prototyping of strategies. All features in 2).
In these two years I have owned MC: Incredible fast release with new features.
4) Do you use MultiCharts in simulation mode only, or do you place live trades with it?
Both.
5) Are you a discretionary trader or an algorithmic trader? How does MultiCharts help you with this?
Algorithmic. Great platform that is getting better and better with every new release. Multicharts big project for next year: Portfolio trading. Multicharts is already great, but then it is near to perfect for my needs.
6) How easy/hard was it for you to learn to use MultiCharts?
Thanks to Easylanguage: Easy.
7) How do you rate MultiCharts's customer service/support, assuming you have needed to use it?
Very good. They are helping fast. Some bugs I submitted were fixed fast. Also some of my feature request were implemented.
8) Do you believe MultiCharts is competitively priced?
Since it is a lifetime licence: Yes. You are getting year after year new great features and never have to pay again.
Best software investment I ever made.
9) How do you rate the community support that exists for MultiCharts?
Good. On their forum, there are some great user contributions. Unfortunately, user commnunity is not as huge as Ninjatraders.
One more thing:
Before buying Multicharts, I was also evaluating Ninjatrader too. Finally I decided for MC because of the features mentioned above, especaially the programming language Easylanguage.
Though this thread is not about Ninjatrader, but when I watched here on futures.io (formerly BMT) the webinar "NinjaTrader 8 Preview and Q&A Discussion" and heard Ray saying that they also have to consider their partners whether they implement a new feature or not, I was dissappointed though I don't have bought NT. That is in my view very bad for all the lifetime holders.
I'm glad that Multicharts obviously doesn't have such a big base of partners who develop and sell "additions". I think that is one of the main aspect why Multicharts development of new features is incredible fast. (I'm belonging to those who would never buy indicators, strategies etc. For some people just the big base of partners is a must, but not for me)
1) How long have you been using MultiCharts? 3 Year
2) What are your favorite features of MultiCharts? Stability, Back test, multiple timeframes, easylanguage compatability
3) What are some must-have deal breaker features in MultiCharts that you could not do without? see point 2
4) Do you use MultiCharts in simulation mode only, or do you place live trades with it? Live trades.
5) Are you a discretionary trader or an algorithmic trader? How does MultiCharts help you with this? Automated strategies using live money - I can't trade do discretionary.
6) How easy/hard was it for you to learn to use MultiCharts? I work in IT and have programmed / used Ninja before MultiCharts - making the switch was easy.
7) How do you rate MultiCharts's customer service/support, assuming you have needed to use it? Not used it.
8) Do you believe MultiCharts is competitively priced? It is ok
9) How do you rate the community support that exists for MultiCharts? Not as good now that they don't participate in futures.io (formerly BMT)...
However there are lots of TradeStation users who provide a lot of information and a few die hards on futures.io (formerly BMT) who provide a good community.
1) How long have you been using MultiCharts?
Six months
2) What are your favorite features of MultiCharts?
Portfolio Backtester, Bar Magnifier, Power language programming, breaking up trading system components into individual signals.
3) What are some must-have deal breaker features in MultiCharts that could not do without?
The amazing tech support they offer. Their back testing engine is the most accurate and precise out of all products I used so far.
4) Do you use MultiCharts in simulation mode only, or do you place live trades with it?
I use it for backtesting and I’m currently paper trading my strategies in an IB simulated account before I commit real money.
5) Are you a discretionary trader or an algorithmic trader? How does MultiCharts help you with this?
Algorithmic trader
6) How easy/hard was it for you to learn to use MultiCharts?
Easy, I came from using OpenQuant which is filled with bugs. You had to hardcode anything in OpenQuant.
7) How do you rate MultiCharts's customer service/support, assuming you have needed to use it?
See my point above. Also, I like their project management page. This allows me to see what features I can look forward to.
8) Do you believe MultiCharts is competitively price?
Yes, especially for the lifetime the tech support.
9) How do you rate the community support that exists for MultiCharts?
It is alright I guess.
1) How long have you been using MultiCharts? 1 week just coming over from Tradestation
2) What are your favorite features of MultiCharts? easylanguage compatibility helps me while I transition toward learning C#
3) What are some must-have deal breaker features in MultiCharts that you could not do without? see #2 above as well as choice of brokers
4) Do you use MultiCharts in simulation mode only, or do you place live trades with it? I plan to do both
5) Are you a discretionary trader or an algorithmic trader? How does MultiCharts help you with this? I am both, since i currentlyy run easylanguage its a bridge toward using C# that I wouldn't have had had I went to NT
6) How easy/hard was it for you to learn to use MultiCharts? i think it will be pretty easy coming from TS, the dialogs are very similar
7) How do you rate MultiCharts's customer service/support, assuming you have needed to use it? Haven't needed it yet but their support forum seems well monitored and responsive
8) Do you believe MultiCharts is competitively priced? I bot the easylanguage and .net versions for alittle more than a regularly priced lifetime license for one, so I'm ok with that........... now the price doesn't compare with the cost of Amibroker pro but oh well LOL
9) How do you rate the community support that exists for MultiCharts? I really have had much time to interact with the community but it seems to be fairly small judging but the number of user forum posts
Summary: this post gives my subjective speed measurements on portfolio-level backtests performed on Tradestation's (TS) Portfolio Maestro and Multicharts 64-bit (MC).
If you don't want details, just skip to the end of the post for these results.
Hi …
2) What are your favorite features of MultiCharts?
Portfolio optimiser
3) What are some must-have deal breaker features in MultiCharts that you could not do without?
Portfolio optimiser with multicore/multithread support, it's faast.
4) Do you use MultiCharts in simulation mode only, or do you place live trades with it?
Now just backtesting still.
5) Are you a discretionary trader or an algorithmic trader? How does MultiCharts help you with this?
Algorithmic. MC has great, accurate (I check using my own Excel formulas) and fast backtester and optimiser.
6) How easy/hard was it for you to learn to use MultiCharts?
Easy. Learned basic easylanguage whilst using Tradestation, so that was no effort.
The software itself is very easy to use.
7) How do you rate MultiCharts's customer service/support, assuming you have needed to use it?
Excellent - not much support in the forums, but great email or live support.
Actually, MC themselves note this - that they don't bother with forums too much because they provide great 1-on-1 support.
8) Do you believe MultiCharts is competitively priced?
Yes.
9) How do you rate the community support that exists for MultiCharts?
As I note above, not great, certainly Tradestation is huge compared to MC.
Maybe you can arrange with MC to move their support forums here at nexusfi.com (formerly BMT), so that the users can merge, MC can follow all posts, and it will be a win win?!
2) What are your favorite features of MultiCharts?
- chart trading
- multiple time frame charts are a cinch
- relatively stable (IMO better than NT, not as good as TWS)
- short innovation cycle (e.g., latest beta includes volume profile/delta)
- Power/EasyLanguage allows rapid idea prototyping (reference words & coding style intuitive; ~ 1/3 the number of lines as MC .NET or NT C# to do the same thing, handles most of want I want to do without requiring add-ons designed for TradeStation)
- love the way MC handles workspaces
- love the way MC handles trade reporting/accounting
- intrabar order generation + backtest bar magnifier
- overall look, feel & features seems like a relatively mature product--instills confidence.
3) What are some must-have deal breaker features in MultiCharts that you could not do without?
- Chart trading
- PowerLanguage for ease of use (and MC .Net's development environment)
4) Do you use MultiCharts in simulation mode only, or do you place live trades with it?
- both (no local sim trading in MC but trade broker paper and backtest).
5) Are you a discretionary trader or an algorithmic trader? How does MultiCharts help you with this?
- both
- Development environment is adequate (like the fact code changes are updated for all live instances of an indicator or signal in all active charts automatically, and that MC. NET will interface with VS 2010).
- strategy execution relatively robust (e.g., places orders as expected, not phased by loss of connectivity)
6) How easy/hard was it for you to learn to use MultiCharts?
- easy but have previous experience with store-bought trading apps via NT and have programmed for approximately 40 years.
7) How do you rate MultiCharts's customer service/support, assuming you have needed to use it?
- haven't used it but from the support forum seems proactive and informed.
8) Do you believe MultiCharts is competitively priced?
- Yes, especially the bundle (MC + .Net)
9) How do you rate the community support that exists for MultiCharts?
- IMO MC documentation and community support is sparse compared e.g. to NT & TS (e.g., no in-depth discussion of reserved words, few or no examples in the help docs), but TradeStation docs & community and futures.io (formerly BMT) carries it
