Hey Platypus, is the thing about letting NT7 run for hours real? I have noticed my system does seem to chug a bit after long runs. I haven't gone live with it yet but will need to let it run 24/7... do you think this will cause performance issues?
Good question. I read in another post by Big Mike that TT data is filtered. I am looking at hooking up with a NT w TT feed via Advantage but trying to find out how well that would work.. Any new info on this topic?
I personally have no idea and i'm not a programmer but I do know that brokers hate scalpers... could be the pressure to slow things down is coming from the brokers support side, not the traders??
Hi Roger, thanks for the info. I'm not great with the technology side of things, and this is very interesting. I'm running a similar pc and am inclined to have both IQ AND Zen. Are you saying that you can have two feeds running simultaneously into the NT7, one for charting and the other for execution, and it runs clean?
Speaking for myself, yes you can have two. But, you cannot individually customize or select which one drives your DOMs or Charts, it will be the first one you connect to that has access to that symbol.
So for instance, if you connect to Zen Fire first, and IQFeed second, and try to access a contract that Zen doesn't support by IQFeed does, NT will fall back to IQfeed for that symbol.
Also you can configure the primary feed to use the secondary feed should the primary feed stop working intermittently.
But, you cannot drive chart 1 with Zen Fire, and chart 2 with IQFeed, using the same symbol. You can do this with MultiCharts however, and MultiCharts has a really great interface for managing this.
Thanks Big Mike, that's tres cool! Approaching my second anniversary in a free rental - unfinished basement suite, working at this 24/7, literally, and having blown out a few accounts along the way, I don't have the luxury of running multiple high performance pcs.
In an ideal world, having read and absorbed the wealth of information on the threads here, I would have a couple of the best pcs on the market, one with nt7/iq for charting 6E, my trading vehicle of choice, and the other for straight execution with X direct on the exchange. On account of the fiscal limitations however I am leaning towards Mirus/NT7/Zen+IQ/6E/ and of course Gomi.
And I can't wait to get on the exchange with the new tools I've picked up here. Thanks a million dude!
Are you still going to use X_Trader for your trade execution in this your "Mirus/NT7/Zen+IQ/6E" setup ? Or the "X direct on the exchange" is entirely another process for your trade execution ?
Hi Lolu, in a perfect world I would have a second machine running X Trader for execution. I had an account with Advantage in Chicago, a clearing firm. It was my second live trading account and it only lasted 38 hours, hence my experience with it was brief, but I can say it was definitely impressive.
I had put on a massive options strategy which to my thinking had a 99.9% probability of ending the month in the money. Up to that point I had spent a tremendous amount of time modeling options without paying much respect to the technicals of the underlying market. So as it were the unthinkable happened as my first day began.
The 6C took a 900 pip straight down nosedive over the course of 38 short hours. One of its most intense moves in its history! As my ship began sinking I started hedging like mad, on X. I turned something crazy over the next 24 hours, in the thousands of contracts. I didn't know what I was doing and was just hedging like mad, in and out, I think I was in shock. When the dust settled I was bust. But let me tell you, X Trader is definitely your friend when you are trading at that frequency and velocity. You can just see how fast it is as the numbers change, it's pretty much instantaneous. It's not sticky at all like other platforms will become at times.
I've spent the time since then trading micro and mini lots with various forex brokers, practicing and learning. Now I'm ready to trade some futures intraday. It would be perfect to have the X setup again but I can't afford it. The software costs between 1-2K USD per month and Advantage requires a fairly substantial deposit to clear with them, whereas going with the Mirus Brokerage requires less funds and of course they offer Ninja Trader free of charge.
When I get back on my trading feet over the next few months here I will setup two pcs. I was just looking at the new i7 extreme cpus and the big ssd drives in total envy. One will run X for execution, the other will run Ninja/IQ for it's great charting and analytics package. Note X trader has very little in the way of charting.
