I was hoping you could talk about your trading desk setup a bit. You look at a lot of different charts, are you swapping between these or are they up all at once?
After I moved from six monitors to three, I'm feeling like I made a mistake. I end up using one monitor for web, one monitor for DOM's and account tracking and email, and leaving only one monitor for charts. It's not enough...
Mike, have you tried displayFusion Pro? Rather than treating your realestate as only three spaces, you can split up the realestate into a custom grid, and the grid can change proportions based on specific application requirements.
For example, TWS for me always opens in the top left quadrant of my 4 vertical screens. My browser always opens on the second screen, a custom height, and location.... and this applies to every application I use.
In addition to the max/min buttons, I have added a further 16 sizing/position options. This is great for charts. A chart will fill the first 3 monitors when I do prep, and once finished, I click another sizing button to move its location so I can continue to monitor etc
The taskbar runs across the bottom of the entire 4 monitors, and any minimized window always sits in the taskbar of the screen you had it "maximised" on.
In addition, I also use "Desktop Pins". Say for example I'm watching "An afternoon with Big Mike" while at the same time looking over charts. When I adjust say a chart that spans across two entire monitors, but within a small area of that chart, I want to continue to watch the video, then Desktop Pins will hold the video at the front of the screen, allowing me to make adjustments to chart without interrupting the video.
Another useful option is holding a dom or order entry window at the forefront while viewing a live chart.
I'm about to change my hardware, I have some doubt between a solid state hard disk and a traditional one. What do you suggest? I mainly run automated strategies, I guess if a solid state can give me that extra speed and most important reliabilty since there are no moving parts.
I think I already answered myself but on the Dell site the difference between the 2 configurations stay on about 2000 usd because the one with solid state hd comes with double xeon as well, so I'm thinking about it.
and I'm ready to change my hardware, after having compared all features I think I will go with this configuration:
Intel Xeon E5-1660V3, 8 core, 3,0-3,5 GHz 20MB
ASRock X99 WS
32 GB ECC RAM DDR4 2133 MHz, 4 x 8 GB
500 GB SSD Samsung 840 EVO
ATI FirePro W7000, 4096 MB GDDR5
case Corsair Obsidian 650D Mid-Tower
At the end my doubt was to put or not two Hd in raid 1 (mirroring) but Samsung is given with 1,5 million hours MTFB and I was worried to loose some speed with Raid.
Any advice is still much appreciated but only before I complete the order
i owned that case and found the cooling particularly for the GPU poor. The stock fans are pretty bad, often users replace them. The front intake grille can noise if the front fan spins too quickly. Great looking case, just a few flaws being the first mid tower in this series.
I replaced the case with an FT02 which is superior cooling wise, keeps out dust (unlike the Corsair) and the finish and build quality are far superior also.
I use four displayport cables connected to a GPU and the FT02 secures them so they avoid the pull of gravity overtime - see how the cables exit the case at the rear
Also, The AMD Pro cards are slow to receive driver updates - Big Mike and a couple of other users have experienced issues from what I have read in this thread. I'm also not sure how quiet these cards are. I opt for a gaming card to overcome these issues.
Gigabyte 970 has 3 displayport and 1 HDMI to run four monitors.
Thank you! Your advices are really helpful! I had indeed some doubt on the case. At the end the shape looked good and I thought one 200 fan + 120 fan on the back would be ok for cooling but I'm thinking again after your comments.
...I ordered it with FT02 case . Thank you for your help!
I no longer use the stock fans as I went custom water cooling, however when I did, I added a fan controller to reduce the speed even more of the intake fans - linked below will convert the fans to adjust the speed according to the temperature of the CPU
indeed, after your advice I read a lot of stuff on it and Ft02 is probably the best mid case on the market.
Unfortunately I'm not able to build it myself, I choosed the components but I've to do the job to my supplier.
Your system look great, you did a fantastic job on it! I love water cooling, but I guess it's something you have to be able to manage and I'm not good with hardware building ...so I stuck to fan.
I will post a picture of my setup when it's done. Thank you
