If the plant's electrical yard floods and shorts out, the plant will lose all electric power. Water levels in the Missouri River are expected to continue to rise through the summer.
All it takes is loss of electric power to cause an inevitable meltdown in the reactor and the spent fuel pool. They already lost power for a few hours.
Hold your breath... Anyone who claims to be in favor of nuclear power is an idiot and a criminal against humanity.
People have short memories. I live in Pennsylvania, and was around for the three mile island incident. Every time Nuclear Power shows it's devastating potential, everyone cools their heels about it, then 20 years go by, they forget, and start the campaign for nuclear power again, until the next disaster... they will probably forget Fukushima within another 20 years, and the cycle will repeat itself.
Here's a link to Arnie Gundersen's website for those who wish to become informed about Nuclear Power, The Menace to Human Survival.
Think about what will happen after the grid goes down for the last time and ALL of these monstrosities lose electric power, permanently. If is just a matter of WHEN, not IF.
I am a mechanical engineer with a pretty good understanding of electric power generation. I think that nuclear power is by far the worst and most dangerous technological abomination of all time. But who am I to argue with such geniuses as Jack Welch, Glenn Beck, and Barack Obankster.
I'm all for nuclear...I happen to be surrounded by them and have no problem at all....out of curiousity what would you replace them with ?...just don't say windmills and solar.
I think all nuclear power plants are just time bombs waiting to detonate. We just don't have the knowledge or technology to contain them when things go wrong. Was the devastation of Chernobyl worth the years of cheap power it provided? When a meltdown occurs, all of a sudden the brilliant engineers who designed the plant, are coming up with brilliant ideas like using shredded newspaper, sawdust and super glue to plug up cracks in a reactor that is melting down!, ask TEPCO. We just don't have the means to deal with these kinds of extra ordinary consequences of the technology. If you are gonna build a car that can go 250 miles an hour, you should know how to build the brakes to stop it as well, as it approaches a cliff.
I think you will have a different perspective if/when one of the nuclear power plants near you has an accident, and you have to evacuate your family, and 6 months later your kids start developing obscure heath issues that your doctors have no idea how to deal with.
