Hi everyone my name is Tom im 19 years old and from Melbourne Australia.

I have been trading CFD and metals for around 2 years and have passed FTMO funded account.

i wanted to ask some people for some advice. I am trying to look for a hedge fund company/ investment management company to trade for or even be aware of, I have tried calling brokers and multiple hedge funds around Australia asking about their instrument and if they touch the realm of CFD/futures however, majority say "we dont give out that information" which is understandable. I assume this market is very secretive .

i am not sure what to do or how to go about this with my career, im very passionate in trading cfd and i want to take it to the next level in becoming a fund manager in this area, if anyone is able to give me advice that would be much appreciated.

kind regards,

Tom

Hey Tom,

It is good to hear about the progress you've made for your age. I am from sydney. I have similar desire 15 years ago may be more. Time flies nowadays.
I've been patient about trading at the time and was reading everything about the market and people. So, some day I found or someone recommended me this book: Masters Of The Market by Geoff Wilson, Anthony Hughes and Matthew Kidman. This book is written by the fund manager. So I finishing the book I decided to contact the writer and the most interesting people that got my attention. Let me tell they all were open for a chat. Even till this days, I still have signed copy of the book by Geoff. What I am saying is, I think you are looking in a wrong direction and there are simpler ways to find what you want to get. With the Internet it may be even easier you just need to think outside of square.

I think you still need to define what exactly you want to do. Do you want to do trading or you want to do analysis. I don't believe hedge funding is all about trading. Spend some time and study what Fund Mangers do, how it is all working.

If you want to just trade spent next 3 years refining your strategy document it and have a track record. There are many prop shops in Australia whom you can join. The Prop shop companies running selection time to time. Another suggestion I can make is Open your own brokerage account and trade it for 2-3 years if you really that good in trading, people will find you.

You can also join Axia Futures company. I believe they have one Australian guy in a team.

The Key question here is What do you enjoy doing ? Day today trading or Stock Analysis and future forecast, economics etc.

Good luck

Hi tr8d3r, thank you very much for reply i really appreciate it, you have opened my mind up a lot more. to be honest i think i just want to trade, i like the idea of trading and researching about different people and their theories as well reading books on it. I also like looking into complex econometric models and mathematics. I forgot to mention i am also algorithmic trader developing ea.'s on MQL5/MT5

I will take a look at that book you suggested.

thank you for opening up my perspective.

can i ask more about your backround as a trader and your path you are in now?

In short, I haven't made much move, gave up on market on multiple occasions. Having said that I love it very much and still have a hope that I may succeed at some point of time.

There are many evidences in this site that proofs that it is possible to live off day trading. There are many successful day traders on this website alone.
Other examples were provided already Axia or SMB Capital. All you need to do is to keep your profit larger then you loss.

@tr8d3r,

Living off prop firm trading is absolutely possible - I know traders making $10k-30k monthly. But here's the reality check:

The Survival Funnel:
- 95% fail evaluations
- Of those who pass, 80% blow accounts within 90 days
- Only 1% maintain profitability beyond 6 months

What The 1% Do Differently:

1. Multiple Accounts - Run 5-10 funded accounts across firms (FTMO, Apex, Topstep). When one blows, income continues.

2. Micro Risk - While firms allow 1%, pros risk 0.25-0.5% per trade. On your $10k FTMO, that's $25-50, not $100.

3. One Strategy - Trade ONE session, ONE instrument, ONE setup. No discretion, pure execution.

Income Reality:
Months 1-3: -$3k (fees)
Months 4-6: $0-2k
Months 7-12: $2k-5k
Year 2+: $5k-15k

Axia/SMB provide training AND infrastructure. Prop firms provide only capital. Big difference.

Before paying any evaluation fee:
- Sim trade their exact rules for 30 days
- Pass 3 times on sim first
- Document everything

Prop firms are tools, not careers. The career is consistent profitability.
