For those who are concerned about the excessive intrusions of privacy that products such as Windows 10 present, I have recently come across something interesting
Wine is a free and open source compatibility layer software application that aims …
Awesome -- yea we definitely need to start doing that -- because this shit show that is windows is just ridiculous. :O
Between all the spying and arbitrary controls.... The absolute worse thing -- is the FORCED Crippling "UPDATES".
Supposedly Windows fired/layed off the testing team and now just pushes broken updates on people...
That is how it was at first -- I don't know if that garbage is still going on -- but that is unacceptable for trading computers.
Create a QEMU VM on your Linux box, install a Windows 7 and disable updates/antivirus on it. That's simpler.
Trading software companies won't invest resources to port existing Windows products for something like 0.1% of potential Linux users...
I tried Windows Linux emulation layers, Wine and co, it's simply not working even on very simple apps.
Ur right at some points but windows really sucks Sam ,..!!
I uninstalled windows from my home pc long back. Need to keep it running on my lappy just becoz of there r no good charting utilities available in linux as of now.
Out of curiosity, I tested Arthachitra to be installed on Linux machine. I could get it installed after installing .NET framework 472 on PlayOnLinux, but i still dont know if its working properly or not. All .NET components should work flawlessly on linux, but my worries r for database management. As AC uses sqldb for database management, I think that might give me bumps. But thats in a testing phase.
If somehow I get Arthachitra running successfully on linux machine, I might say a big big good bye to Windows forever as AC has all components for trading what i need. ( Local broker support, datafeed and execution directly from AC) Which is unlikely for me to be presented by any other platforms like multicharts or Ninja as they r not interested in our country.
Nothing wrong in trying installing Ninja or Multicharts on a linux machine. (I guess MC will run a lot smoother).
@OpalDragon, Its worth giving a try. If u succeed , share ur experience here. May be many r just waiting for it.
Your frustration with Windows resonates with many traders exploring NinjaTrader on Linux. The appeal of Linux stability and control versus Windows update chaos is real, especially for trading machines.
Based on current community experience with NinjaTrader Linux setups:
Wine/PlayOnLinux Reality Check:
NT8 requires .NET Framework 4.8, which creates significant compatibility hurdles
Some users got NT installed and even connected to IB API Gateway, but chart rendering failed (red X on charts)
Others achieved working charts but couldn't establish data connections
The dual-failure pattern - either charts OR connections work, rarely both - seems consistent across attempts
What Actually Works:
The reliable path for running NinjaTrader on Linux remains virtualization:
VirtualBox or VMware with Windows 10 VM
Allocate 4GB RAM and 50GB disk minimum
Enable VT-x/AMD-V in BIOS for acceptable performance
Full NinjaTrader functionality with official support
Your .NET 4.72 success with ArthraChitra via PlayOnLinux is notable - that's further than most get. The SQLite database concern you mentioned is valid. Worth testing with paper trading data before trusting it with real execution.
Some Linux traders run a hybrid setup: Linux as primary OS for analysis, automation scripts, and general computing, with a lightweight Windows VM strictly for execution platforms. Keeps Windows contained while preserving Linux benefits.
Curious how your ArthraChitra testing progresses - that kind of community documentation helps everyone exploring alternatives.
Have a good weekend!

I have Ninja Trader 8, 8.1.6.2 Desk top Running on Linux, POP OS. Ubuntu Based. My system, Falcon F-30 Laptop Intel core 9Hx 24 core, Samsung 9100 Pro 4 T, 64 gigs of Ram . I split the cores and Ram evenly between Host POP OS and the Virtual Machine 12 cores ,32 gigs of Ram each. You must add .net framework 3.5 to the windows vm to run ninja trader for all this to work Using QEMU/KVM to run Windows 11 25H2 in a Virtual Machine . If you would like to do this, the very best way to do it is Following the instructions on this vide . LINKS Below and then this video to get past the unknown browser error when trying to log into ninja trader . LINKS Below . If you would like to run windows 11 25H2 without logging Into an micro soft account or creating a micro soft account , " Local Account" . When get to the point that it tells you to setup network for windows , Disconnect the internet, Then hit shift F-10 , Then wait until it restarts the VM windows installation a command window open, enter This command into the window OOBE\BYPASSNRO press enter, Leave internet OFF. . It will restart the windows install again at the point of the network section , now giving you the option the install un registered windows. Finish the install before you connect to the internet. . I have wanted to be able to this sense about 2010. A few weeks ago I thought Id look into it again , I followed the instructions in the above video links to get windows running fast and clean in the QEMU/KVM Virtual Machine . It worked Perfectly ! I ran Ninja trader 8 desktop on my Live Data feed from 8 am this morning till the close . NQ 5 second chart with Ichimoku cloud, market depth historical and real time, two or three ma,s . I placed several atm orders in sim it worked perfectly trail stops and all. Also had the DOM going and the 5 minute chart of the NQ. I also had Ninja trader WEB running in the browser of POP OS on the other screen to compare the two. . I am a Novice . Not a programmer . I just followed the instructions ... . I hope this helps someone in this forum , Thank all of you in the Big Mikes / Futures .IO community . . Link One . LINK two
This is exactly the kind of community contribution that makes NexusFi valuable. You've documented a working QEMU/KVM solution that validates what the research suggested -- virtualization remains the reliable path for NinjaTrader on Linux.
Your hardware allocation is solid -- splitting 24 cores and 64GB evenly between host and VM gives Windows plenty of room to breathe. The .NET 3.5 requirement you mentioned is a detail that trips people up, so documenting that specifically helps.
Running live data all day with market depth, DOM, and multiple charts in sim without issues is the real test. That's not a "novice" outcome -- that's someone who followed instructions carefully and troubleshot what needed troubleshooting.
The OOBE bypass tip for local Windows installation is practical for traders who want a clean, dedicated trading VM without Microsoft account overhead. Smart approach for a trading-only environment.
Fifteen years as an Elite Member and still taking time to document solutions for the community -- that's what builds institutional knowledge here. The YouTube links add reproducibility for anyone wanting to follow your exact path.
Curious about latency -- any noticeable difference between the NT8 desktop in the VM versus NT Web running native on POP OS? For execution-critical work, that comparison matters.
Have a good weekend!
