there's only one single free indicator in the whole download section. that's the pas in the free section. all other indicators are elite. so now we have an elite section in the elite downloads.
at one time, all indicators were free except the elite circle. I can't remember when it changed. but it's been a few years.
I guess it depends on what you mean by "free indicators." Basically, all indicators and strategies on FIO are Elite-only except one, and are free to Elite members and unavailable otherwise. I like thinking of them as "free" myself since I never have to pay for them.
The only thing in the "Free Section" is one indicator, PriceActionSwing (in both NT7 and 8 versions), and that's only because the programmer, dorschden, asked to keep it that way. There's nothing else there. As I recall, there used to be both free (free to anyone) and Elite only (free if you were Elite), but all except this one got consolidated into Elite. This was a while back.
I understand the idea of using "free" to mean there's no cost at all, but it's not as if there's a whole big list of free stuff there . I think the designation of "Free Section" could easily be changed to something like "Non-Elite" or "Public." The availability of the free indicators to Elite members only is a drawing card for signing up for Elite status.
Because of this, I think the designation of "Free Section" should be changed to something like "Non-Elite" or "Public."
I agree 100% about keeping things in the elite sections that was one of the big reasons I originally signed up and never did end up using the gomi indicators but I also think it needs to be worded differently. If there was a
"public" section it would give potential elite members a taste of whats to come if they sign up.
my only other suggestion would be to somehow make the chat more popular I don't know if the room two'ers should move to one but I think the chat is a very underutilized part of this forum.

I think the idea was to keep all the indicators reserved for Elite, none for public.
People, at least at that time way back when, were joining as non-Elite just so they got their hands on indicators, which we sometimes (often) saw being offered for sale after they were put up on this site and were downloaded.
So free indicators became non-free, but not here.
I think it would be a mistake to offer good, resellable stuff for free.
Guys, the changes to left side of posts are still work in progress. Long overdue, and just some manual labor involved to clean things up.
I'm improving the way vendors are identified. I'm improving the way site sponsors are identified.
I'm also more clearly identifying if a vendor has been banned.
I will look for a way to make it easier for Elite Members to more quickly change their user title as well.
As for the Legendary part, as pointed out -- let me briefly explain:
Right now, there are only a handful of Legendary members. These members are the top ranked Market Wizards. I've prepended the text "Legendary" in front of their user title. If they have no custom title, it defaults to Market Wizards, creating a "Legendary Market Wizard". In the case of a custom title, like , it will say "Legendary <custom title>" which in this case is "Legendary You did what?!".
OK, so - first, I have made sure that no one can put the word Legendary in their custom title. It gets deleted, so no one can claim Lengendary status without earning it.
Now second, to try to address the case of , it's a bit more difficult because I still want him to be recognized for his contributions as a Legendary member.
I will look into moving the Legendary identification tag to a different position.
Now lets talk about vendors:
In the case of a vendor who has been banned, the name of their website will be removed. I considered both aspects, but settled on this in the end. By removing the name of their company, we remove any promotion of their bad behavior. One could also make the argument that the name of a bad behaviorist should be highlighted, kind of as a warning, specifically naming their company. However, I believe that the actual content of the users post will give them away as to what they were doing that caused them to be banned, which is usually pretending to be someone they aren't (a normal happy user encouraging others to buy a product -- despite selling that product themselves), aka 'vendor self-promotion'.
Now, in the case of a normal vendor who is not banned -- we are removing links to their website, but their company name will instead be more prominently listed under their username. Before, it was no company name -- only a website URL. In essence, we've reversed this behavior -- no URL, but company name instead. We believe this better helps users identify the member.
And frankly, far too many vendors (we have hundreds in our database) only come here to promote their own site, which is in fact a violation of our rules, but you might consider them "polite vendors" where they just make one or two useful posts (that aren't self-promotion, totally fine) but solely in order to get the SEO benefit of our site linking to theirs. Then they offer no further contributions. The argument of using a nofollow tag doesn't work any more in this day in age of SEO. So, we remove the URL entirely to discourage that behavior, and instead if they genuinely want to contribute to the community in a positive way, and get the recognition from our members that comes with it, then they will be able to do so and receive just that -- with their company name displayed.
Please understand that in particular the vendor challenge is a large one. With hundreds of registered vendors (and thousands more stealth vendors perhaps??) we need time to manually update all of their profiles. I've tried to figure out a mysql query that could do it for me, but as of it I haven't had enough coffee to make it happen.
I also want to mention we specifically added a 'Contact Us' section for vendors to easily ask to be registered as a vendor. This was a while back, and is working. Despite what some vendors claim, we don't have it "out against them". We simply want them to not abuse the community, hide their identity, post dishonest information, or otherwise take advantage of our members. Any vendor who follows the spirit of our community is welcome to be here.
Last, we've improved the listing for our site sponsors. We have only a small number of site sponsors, and they deserve a lot of credit and attention. First, as I've mentioned many times before, the number of sponsors we allow on the site is limited personally by me -- saying no to over 90% of vendors that want to give me $$ to be a sponsor. No! I've always done my absolute best to put honor and integrity first, not money. I hope you can see the difference in that on our site vs others.
I only say yes to a sponsor who I firmly believe can offer an excellent value, product and service to members, and that the members will benefit from it and not be taken advantage of by it.
That said, sponsors do financially support our community. Without sponsors, I would not be able to devote as much of my own time to maintaining the site, because of a simple cost/benefit calculation. While I love to help people, I do have a family to support of my own that must always come first. I am sure everyone understands.
So, sponsors are going to get a little more attention to the left-side of their posts. This currently includes a link to their website, a link to their AMA thread if applicable, a link to webinars they've presented on FIO, as well as a link to the Elite discount offer if applicable. This is a work in progress.
What happened to the new framework? Nothing happened. Still there, but honestly I'm so far behind on getting it transitioned that I gave up on my self-imposed restriction of "don't improve the old site" and instead returned to improving what we all have and use today. But the new framework is still of critical importance, and we will proceed with it.
What about other priorities that are more important? Some of you may be wanting/needing/asking for things that I haven't covered, and wonder why I prioritize certain things over others. Well, it's complicated but comes down to what has the highest impact for the majority of users. Sometimes I am in the mood to code. Sometimes I'm in the mood to answer hundreds of emails. I try to balance it best I can, thank you for your understanding if you are waiting for me to do something.
With regards to some of the other more recently proposed changes (like subforums) in this thread, that kind of stuff is on my short list and will be implemented as soon as I feel confident in the new structure being one that can last several years.
Thank you as always for your support, and I welcome all of your feedback and comments like always.
The "free indicators" in Download section does need to be re-worked to be more clear. That change happened years ago, but the underlying URL structure we have so deeply customized and embedded into the site (it was early days on the site, I was still learning how to use vBulletin and made many mistakes) is what makes it such a huge challenge to change.
If you want a further explanation as to WHY the change was made, check here for 500+ post discussion from 2011:
I am contemplating a major / drastic change to the behavior of all downloads on the site. The change would be to make all downloads Elite Only. I mean all downloads, in posts, threads, downloads section, everywhere globally. The only exclusion …
Oops, also forgot to mention that for left-side of posts -- when it's a vendor or a sponsor, I've eliminated the display of user profile fields such as location, platform, favorite futures to trade, trading experience level, etc.
I felt it was not relevant to a vendor/sponsor for the most part, and is better to clean up the display by removing that information.
Does anyone have feedback on whether or not the same info should be removed from my own profile as well as other moderators?
Here is an example of a before/after for my own account to highlight the removal for your consideration:
