Just here to learn if futures trading is for me or if I should just stick to options
I have some questions on platforms, commissions and so on but will do a bit of research on the forum first as I am sure someone has already answered some the questions I have.
Greetings...Well, I'm not quite sure how the google spat me out here but I am tickled at the prospect... I was researching Fibonacci, and Lucas numerology FAST forward Fibonnaci and Elliot Waves and well you know how it goes. I'm waiting for the day they start running background checks for ADD in order to use google. I myself have never been diagnosed but... hey did you see that? I am a father of 4 and a Firefighter by trade. Love my job but inquisitive to understand more and more everyday! Woke up a little over a year ago and decided I wanted to get into trading, poured over everything I could on Net Option Selling through another website and felt like I learned a tremendous amount. Tried paper trading for several months saw significant gains (paper) upward 11k in 3 weeks. Saved up 3k to "jump" in and set up my first Iron Condor just a day before the October Drawback from the Fed. I dodged some wrenches and am slowly coming back just investing on market sentiment. I have realized that much like the theory with option selling option buying profits should be taken at earliest convenience with theta in check for overall long term growth. Account allocations should remain the same and so should timing on close... Anyhow, I could be completely wrong, I never know, that is why I am here. I am insatiably hungry for knowledge I will try and respond promptly to requests... Please understand I have 4 kids and it is HARD to find time to do much of anything these days and work keeps me low on reserves. Looking forward to learning and growing with each and everyone of ya!
I'm here to learn about actively trading in futures markets, as there are years and years of experience and knowledge on this forum via threads and webinars I will be studying before actively participating in the forums.
Hi! I've been through the ringer for about 8 years. I'm finally in a position to pursue my life goal of becoming a consistent futures trader. I feel like I've gone through all of the stages of trader development and get closer and closer to success without it ever lasting. I first found pennies, then small caps, then options, large caps and more recently futures, which is what I want to focus on. Day trading futures is the right fit for me. I live and work in Germany, which allows me to trade most days with my job, and is actually one of the reasons I took employment here. I've not always focused on trading, but always new that it was what I wanted to do. I've accomplished some important career goals in engineering and now have a chance to put more focus on my passion. I've put in some work, and will continue to work until I finally make it. Looking for positive support in this lonely game. I've got at least a 5 year horizon to become successful and I hope to be active in this forum. Looking forward to growing with you all!
I been trading futures s&p 500 with ninja trader platform for 5 years. For me its been tough time and also good time. But I always wanted learn more and more. This forum got so.many data I can learn from. I am looking forward to communicate with all the top traders in this world. So excited.
I placed my first futures trade back in 1997 when my boss told me one day I had a 5 contract limit. I Picked up the phone to the floor and was stopped out of my first losing trade before lunch time.
I remember not long after that making something like 60 ticks in 10 seconds on my 5 lots. I was pumped! Waiting for a cash rate announcement, most of the mkt priced in no move, small chance of a cut. Counting down the seconds to the announcement, I figured that I'd take a contrarian position, just in case there was a cut. If there wasn't, then what was the downside? Not much at all in my very young and naive mind. I called the floor, buy 5, I was limit-long! Ten seconds later a surprise 50bps rate cut was announced. Mine was one of the only transactions in the pit during the seconds pre-release silence. The bid went ape, the desk was cheering, I was a legend. The big swingers on the desk stood up and waved at me, laughing. I took profit and went downstairs for a cigarette with a girl from the index arb desk and thought my life was the best life on earth. I got a funny reputation for a few days after that as the super-junior nobody guy who must have had central bank insider info!
I've done a lot of different things since then. Of note was a 7 year period of coding and trading long term trend following systems across an increasingly large and diverse portfolio of futures. I think I had 25 products in there by the end. Sugar was one of my big wins, and oil. In my portfolio backtesting, I started looking at the correlations between symbol volatility, and the volatility of correlations ... or something like that... all to manage my portfolio risk.I swore i was onto something. But I didn't have enough capital to make it work the way it could work and never financially justified the effort. Shut it all down as the pre-GFC credit crunch was cracking and after I took a 30% DD in a few weeks. I had way too much open heat v capital. I should have been trading 1R = 0.1% of capital for that big portfolio, but was running more like 2% per trade!! Was trading OPM as well, and that added some nasty emotional strain.
Didn't speculate for 10 years, lost interest v.s ok yielding zero effort static investments. A year ago the BTC thing woke me up again and I started to look at discretionary day trading. Thankfully I have a lot of free time. I had no idea what had been growing in the retail short-term trading technology space! wow.
