Is anyone here using TWS on Linux? Im just trying to use the demo (I haven't yet opened an account with them) and am not having much luck.

Ultimately I will be trading with IB using their API, so all im trying to do is get the demo working so that I can begin integrating and testing with their API.

I am using Linux Mint 17.x and have tried:

- Downloading the standalone unix application from: https://www.interactivebrokers.com/en/index.php?f=674&os=unix&ib_entity=llc&ns=T . After running the app from the terminal as detailed in the installation instructions the login screen is displayed but there is no username/password filled in. Presumably this would work if I had a live account, but since I dont I would expect it to automatically be filled in with edemo + password. So I dont know how to login from here.

- Downloading the jnlp file from https://www.interactivebrokers.com/en/index.php?f=553&twsdemo=1 .When opening the file IcedTea begins running and the login screen appears with username:edemo and the password filled in. However I then get a popup saying 'Unable to locate application files'. I can see that the Settings directory on the login screen is set to /home/<my_user>/IBjts which is where the standalone app is installed. The program then exits

- Installing using wine1.7 - When clicking on the desktop shortcut that is created after installation I get a pop saying 'File not found' followed by another popup saying 'There is no windows program configured to open this kind of file'

Ideally I would like to get the first option working (ie: standalone app) since it appears to be working but I just don't have a live account so the problem is that there are no demo login credentials filled in. However with the jnlp file (2nd option above), the demo login details are already filled in.

Ultimately I will likely move on to using IB gateway and not bother with TWS, but since I will initially be testing I want to see the orders / changes etc on TWS so I can see if everything is working. I don't think IB gateway has a demo anyway?

As a side note, do any of you trade live using the API from a Linux machine? Or is this ultimately more effort than it's worth and I should rather just get things going on windows?

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

ok i've managed to get the standalone app working. As suspected I just need the edemo password which I managed to find with a bit of googling. It is beyond me why IB doesn't provide this information (at least not where it makes sense, ie: on the download page).

Anyway, im going to see if I can get things going with the API later today.

Did you peruse using TWS on Linux. Any luck running it seamlessly? Since you can run Linux from a USB drive I was thinking to install TWS Linux version and use it anywhere (at work in my case). Anyone had luck in running TWS on a Linux through USB?

Yes I have been running TWS in Linux without any problems. It can be a bit 'fiddly' to get working. For example getting it going on my desktop was quick and easy, but on my laptop which also runs Mint, it took a while longer to get working. However once it's setup and working, I haven't had any problems.

I have also been using the IB API which is also fine on Linux so far.

I don't see any reason why it wouldn't work off a usb. Give it a go and report back?
